A Content Designer does not simply create an engaging copy, they take a user-centric approach to generating hyper-localised content, design and development solutions for projects targeting young people across Africa.

This role focuses on three key areas:

1. To take full ownership of ideating, planning, writing and publishing high quality written content for mobile websites on selected projects.

2. Master the E1M CMS platform in order to support the UX and Development teams during the build phase of new projects.

3. Keep a finger on the pulse in terms of site performance metrics and gather key user insights to inform content strategies and site improvements.

The Content Designer will report to the Head of Content and Communities and work closely with Content team members, in-country Community Managers, Project Managers, Programme Designers, Developers, Graphics Designers and UX Designers.

For this role, you may be required to create and design engaging content solutions for sites covering the following topics:

Civil society and advocacy – Nigeria

Financial education – South Africa

Financial literacy and sexual and reproductive health – Uganda

Responsibilities

1. Content Production

  • Generating creative content ideas that are in line with a project’s Content & Community Management Strategy as well as locally relevant to its intended audience
  • Detailed planning and execution of weekly/monthly content schedules, monthly themes, content frequency & roll out of the editorial calendar
  • Demonstrable creative writing of various content pieces following editorial guideline & processes to maintain a consistent tone of voice and style when writing and publishing high quality written content; from polls to quizzes to feature articles etc.
  • Promotion: assisting the Project Management team with all promotional activity, writing promo copy, implementing promo activities and reporting.
  • Social Media: writing and publishing engaging content on various social media channels that accompany project site.

2. Design and Development

  • Master the online Content Management System to create, upload and publish content as well as supporting the UX and Development teams in terms of new site builds, prototypes and current project site enhancements.
  • Provide creative and engaging solutions to turn Programme Design theories into practice through content, design and development
  • Taking full ownership of site performance through regular testing of site functionality, checking for bugs and broken links, on various mobile devices to ensure content and site features are in good working condition.
  • Contribute to the improvement of Content Management System in collaboration with UX designers & developers.

3. Insights and Analytics

  • Work closely with expert advisors and in-country Community Managers where applicable to draw actionable insights that will ensure publication of accurate, locally relevant and reliable content, and ensure a flow of insights from user engagement drives the content production process, design teams, development and overall project outcomes.
  • Maintain awareness of key issues in the field of specified projects and markets in Africa; for example, advocacy, gender equality, women’s health, financial education, sexual and reproductive health, livelihoods and entrepreneurship.

Requirements

  • BA degree or graduate diploma in English, communications, marketing, journalism, advertising, or a related field
  • Three+ years’ experience in planning, writing, and editing copy/content in a professional capacity for web
  • Demonstrable ability to create content that is informative, educational and engaging
  • Demonstrable creative writing skills
  • Demonstrable ability to write case studies, white papers and reports
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Can work and self-organise autonomously
  • A detail-oriented, process-driven individual who can juggle multiple projects
  • Experience with content management systems and a basic understanding of HTML
  • Experience with Google Analytics, Facebook Insights and other digital analytics tools
  • Experience and/or interest in social development in Africa will be advantageous
  • Experience working with UX and Development teams will be advantageous
